Kite Day at Haulover Park is Sunday February 19, 2012   12 to 5 pm

The sky over Miami Beach will display a marvelous array of colors and figures from hundreds of kites in the air during the 19th annual Kite day at Haulover Park, 10800 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach.

The event will be held on the old golf course site. This large field provides room for the biggest kiting events to happen in Florida. Expect to see the 100 foot flying squid, 30 foot flying scuba man, 300 sq foot parafoils. 30 foot flying Nemo Fish and more.

This years special guest is Pete Dolphin, an accomplished kite maker, sport kite performer, and American Kitefliers Association volunteer. He has served as the organization's president and has won top honors in kite flying competitions around the world.

Hosted by Miami-Dade Parks and Skyward Kites, these free events feature paper kite building classes  & demonstrations from longtime kite enthusiasts. In addition, there will be kite-flying competitions for both children and adults. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of the following categories:  highest-flying kites, most unusual kite, best homemade kite, and best homemade traditional kites.

We especially encourage folks that can to make their kites in their traditional styles from countries they may want to represent. In years past we have had kite in the traditional styles of countries like The Bahamas, China, Colombia, Jamaica, Trinidad, Peru, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and many more. It is a fantastic way to celebrate unique diversity of cultures that South Florida has.

People of all ages are encouraged to come out to fly their kites, make their own kites for free or purchase an already-made kite.  There is no limitation to the size and type of kite.  Those who just want to watch can bring a blanket and enjoy the sight of hundreds of kites in the air and some great music.  Food and refreshments & kites will be available for purchase

As with all events held on grassy lawns in Florida, there may be a chance you meet some ants at the festival. It is best if shoes and socks are worn.

A big thank you to our sponsors Pollo Tropical
